Answer: OK – There is a huge difference between Taser and Stun Guns! They are both legal in almost every state. Check the reference below for more legal stuff. Tasers – these pistol shaped devices manufactured by Taser Intl. fire two darts at ranges from 15 to 35 feet max depending on the cartridge used. Civilian model (M-18) is limited to the 15 foot cartridge. They use a high amperage so they produce only 50,000 volts. This is one of the most effective devices I have ever used. If the cartridge darts miss you can reload quickly or use the taser as an extremely powerful stun gun. Stun guns – these devices require you to make direct contact with the target. They use a lower amperage so require a higher voltage. They range from 100,000 to 950,000 volts. They cause intense pain, momentary muscular contraction. These will give a great distraction to facilitate an escape. My personal favorite is the lady lite stunner, 650k at the link below. Pepper Spray – a very effective self defense option. there is no difference between mace and most other basic sprays. If you want power in your spray go for DPS or Fox Labs.

(2) Don’t hesitate to scream and run (3) Do like your mom and dad always said….don’t go somewhere, or be in a crowd where you’d need a weapon. (4) If you really think you need something that bad – search online for classes or seminars (often FREE) in your town….on personal safety. If you still want a weapon, they can send you to a qualified, certified center to learn to use the only thing guaranteed to stop an attacker…but then it’s up to you to learn how to use it…and employ COMMON SENSE in day to day life, and emergency situations. Answer: If you don’t want to get “super involved” then don’t rely on anything you have to learn. Just buy either Pepper spray, a stun gun, or a taser. You don’t have to learn anything then, and all three are extremely effective self defense weapons.

Answer: Tasers are unregulated by federal law. State laws vary, but, in general, if you can buy one in your state of residence, then it’s legal for you to possess one there. Vendors should know the law and not make an illegal sale, but check your local laws just to be sure. Now some professional advice: Tasers are not a good self defense tool for most civilians. Most give you one shot. If you miss, or are attacked by more than one person, or your attacker is wearing clothing thick enough to stop the darts, or the battery dies, you’re out of luck. The “stun gun” types are even worse. They require you to be in contact with your attacker — exactly what you want to avoid — take several seconds to be effective and, again, are only usable against one person at a time. Note that the police officers who carry Tasers also carry guns and pepper spray and nightsticks and usually have other officers backing them up. You won’t have most of those luxuries. If your state allows it, you’re generally better off using pepper spray. It will allow you to engage multiple attackers from a distance, buying you time to run away, which is what you want.

Answer: Do not use a toy for self-defense. Contrary to popular belief, having no gun IS better than having not enough gun. If you run into a bad guy who is armed and you brandish a pellet gun, he is going to see a gun. You will be seen as a threat, and the bad guy will either flee or try to kill you. In the second scenario, you are GOING to die if you’re holding a pellet gun. You would be better off having nothing. An intruder would rob you, sure, but with no gun and your full cooperation, you give him no reason to kill you. No robber is going to kill you without provocation; they’re not looking for that kind of trouble. And anyone who enters your home with the specific intent of doing you harm is going to do it whether you have a pellet gun or not.
For real defense, you need a real gun. Not just any gun, either–you need a gun in a caliber capable of reliably shooting someone dead. .22s and such are for plinking, and they’re not going to do you any more good than a pellet gun would. Get a 9mm at a minimum; a 12-gauge shotgun is ideal and can be propped up against the nightstand. If you don’t want to kill an intruder, there are plenty of non-lethal rounds available for a shotgun that will lay a robber out cold. Never, ever “shoot to wound.” Any person that is shot but not killed will come after you with everything they’ve got, out of sheer self-preservation. If a gun is just not an option for you, get some non-lethal defense. Pepper spray and a stun gun should be a minimum. A solid baseball bat would be a nice addition. Be warned, though–if you intend to use non-lethal force, you’d better be ready to handle the clean-up. That means dealing with a living, breathing criminal inside your home.
Get some good handcuffs, and be ready to hit him with that stun gun (or bat, or crowbar) again and again if he tries to escape. If he does escape, he now has a reason to do you harm, where before he would have just cleaned out your house. The best way to defend yourself from an intruder is not to be an easy target. The motion-sensing spotlights that people mount on the outside of their home are the most cost-effective intruder deterrent there is. The security alarm should be second on the list, but can be quite expensive.
Real and fake security cameras are available for purchase, and both are excellent deterrents. Plant thorny plants outside of bottom-story windows to deter break-ins, and put coarse gravel around those plants to generate plenty of noise when stepped on. Reinforce doors any way that you can. Tiny yappy dogs make excellent burglar alarms, and can hear an intruder in their sleep. If you are not an easy target, a burglar will find another victim. DON’T rely on false security. A weapon that offers less protection than you need will get you killed quicker than having no weapon would.

Answer: NO! unless you have and can provide proof of training in the use of a machette as a self defense weapon, it carris MORE liability to use than does a firearm, and is a guaranteed loss in the civil lawsuit that will follow the criminal trial. If you do not choose or are unable to use a firearm for self defense, the only real choices that won’t cause MORE liability are either a stun gun/taser weapon or a pepper spray type. Both have limited uses and definite drawbacks when trying to stop or disable an armed intruder. AND, you should still obtain training in their use to help limit your liability in criminal or tort charges. Having said all that, if you need to defend your life against an armed attack, or even just a physical attack, my choice would be to fight back with whatever I could lay my hands on, and worry about the lawsuits afterwords (and carry GOOD libility insurance). But to plan to use a machette etc is going to work against you in court.
Better to find yourself a normal household item, that is sufficient for use as a defensive weapon, and that would not raise questions as to why it was available to you. Items like a heavy bowling trophy, are commonly found and don’t raise red flags to a jury like a home made “billy club” would. one shows intent, and the other is just a household item you were able to get your hands on. (If you don’t regularly play softball, you can’t justify having a bat behind every door). Martial arts training has some use in self defense of the home, but it takes a long time to become proficient in it, still carries libility and let’s face it, you can be the ne incarnation of bruce lee, but if I am standing at one end of a hall with a firearm, you can kung foo your way the length of the hall and I am still going to win.
But I have to ask, why not use the proper tool for the job and obtain a firearm and get trained with it? Also, just FYI, use a multi layer defense of your home to reduce the chances of an intruder. Use good outside lighting that removes dark hiding places, put up a good fence, get a dog that barks (doesn’t have to be mean, just bark whenever anyone comes around), install solid core exterior doors with GOOD dead bolt locks. secure all windows and install an alarm system, make sure you make friends with your neighbors, watch out for each other. shoot safe

Answer: Pepper FOAM. It was designed as a way to use pepper spray indoors in tight quarters because it doesn’t splash back or contaminate the area. Also a kubotan or all steel pen. Many older cops used to keep a cross brand pen for filling out tickets, because of the guy getting the ticket decided he didn’t want one, the cop had it in his hand already and could jab it into the other guys neck or hands.
