The Newtown shooting is among the deadliest school shootings, with more victims than when two teenagers went on a rampage at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo. , in April 1999, killing 12 fellow students and a teacher. If the fatality numbers are accurate, it would be among the deadliest school shootings in American history. Before murdering 13 people, injuring 23, and killing themselves 10 years ago in one of the nation’s deadliest school shootings, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold broadcast their unthinkable intentions on frequencies to which their parents, peers and teachers were not tuned in. Eric maintained a website filled with lists of whom and what he hated. Dylan turned in an English assignment that described killing other students. Both boys had been suspended from school and arrested by local police during the academic year preceding the massacre. Chardon High School, a public high school about 35 miles outside of Cleveland, Ohio, was the scene of a deadly shooting yesterday. According to multiple reports, a student entered the cafeteria and opened fire, killing one student and wounding four others. The senseless tragedy is made even worse by the fact that it brings back memories of other school shootings, most notably those at Columbine High School in 1999 and Virginia Tech in 2007, America’s two deadliest school shootings of the last 40 years.
The gunman in the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown has been identified as Adam Lanza . He is also dead, officials said. A senior law enforcement official tells NBC 4 New York that an unidentified woman has also been found dead, shot in the face, at a Newtown home, bringing the death toll to 28. The woman may be Lanza’s mother, sources say. It may be relevant that the gunman had been a victim of bullying and had come from a broken home. These are facts that could conceivably shed light on the gunman’s motives, though to attempt to prematurely draw conclusions from them now with so little information to go on is undoubtedly irresponsible. If news sources want to report on the gunman’s living circumstances or rumors that he’s been bullied, they must take care that what they’re saying is rooted in fact, not just speculation and hearsay.
The threat was made on the exact same day that 26 people — six adults and 20 young children — were killed in Newtown, Conn. in one of the deadliest school shootings in the history of the United States.
