The United States issued a global travel alert Friday, citing an al-Qaeda threat that also caused the State Department to close its embassies Sunday around the Muslim world.
The State Department warned American citizens of the potential for terrorism particularly in the Middle East and North Africa, with a possible attack occurring or coming from the Arabian Peninsula.
You are aware that dozens of embassies have been attacked over the years and that a hundred or so innocent Americans have been killed in those attacks. Why is the Benghazi attack so different? The only difference that I can see is that it was the first time a US Embassador was killed.
“Current information suggests that al-Qaeda and affiliated organizations continue to plan terrorist attacks both in the region and beyond, and that they may focus efforts to conduct attacks in the period between now and the end of August,” the statement said. Travelers to areas of Israel in the vicinity of the Gaza Strip should be aware of the risks presented by small arms fire, anti-tank weapons, rockets, and mortars launched from inside Gaza toward Israeli cities and towns. These attacks can come with little warning. Some rockets have traveled more than 40 km (24 miles) from Gaza and landed as far north as Yavne and Gadera and as far east as Beersheva. Gunfire, rocket, and mortar attacks in the regions bordering Gaza have been a regular occurrence. Visitors to these areas should remain aware of their surroundings and of the location of bomb shelters and should take note of announcements and guidance provided by the Home Front Command .
Travelers should make themselves aware of the laws and customs of the countries and regions to which they travel. Discrimination may be based on a variety of issues such as gender or sexual orientation that are viewed differently by different cultures. Trip planners should make this part of travel orientation programs. Travelers should also conduct independent research on these issues.
The State Department recommends travelers exercise caution when traveling the streets of foreign countries. The department warns travelers not to frequent foreign streets alone, especially at night. Travelers should steer away from public demonstrations and civil disturbances and should avoid confrontations whenever possible. It is important to be leery of strangers and never disclose your travel agenda or arrangements. Never leave money or personal valuables in your hotel room.
Department of State periodically lists countries in which travel may not be safe for U.S. travelers in the short term. The reasons for the alerts can range from natural disasters to civil unrest to high-profile events. Each country on the list has a link describing the nature of the alert. travelers of places that could be potentially unsafe; therefore, travelers should use extreme caution when traveling to a country on the U.S. Department of State’s travel alert list. Travel alerts are normally short-term.
Citizens are advised to avoid these areas and large crowds over the coming weeks. We also urge U.S. citizens to maintain situational awareness at all times, to exercise caution, remain vigilant, and to take appropriate security precautions to ensure their own safety. It is good practice to carry a fully charged cell phone and copies of your identification at all times.
The additional attention to the embassies and consulates comes as Republican lawmakers press an investigation into the Sept. 11, 2012 terrorist attack in Benghzai. Lawmakers have accused the Obama administration of misleading the public about the nature of the attack just ahead of the November presidential election.
It may seem odd we are closing our embassies instead of increasing security. The fact they are closing so many is a clear indicator the threat was vague however real. Because we clearly are incapable of taking a hit on a foreign outpost without it turning into a major scandal that simply MUST point right at White House incompetence, they are turtling down in the face of a threat instead of taking proactive and/or reasonable measures based on the actual threat level, instead of the political threat level. Score one for AQ today without them having fired a shot.
Officials should conduct analyses of potential risks to U.S. embassies and take appropriate action to counter them. Embassies that are determined to be in high-risk areas that do not meet security requirements should take priority over more secure embassies elsewhere.
Additionally, U.S. intelligence has picked up signs of an al Qaeda plot against American diplomatic posts in the Middle East and other Muslim countries,” CBS News reports , and has thusly ordered at least 17 embassies throughout the region to close on Sunday. According to a State Department official, “additional days of closing” are “possible” for some of the locations. Affected embassies include those in Egypt, Iraq, Israel, Libya, and Yemen, among others.
