Did you know 80% of the criminal acts that occur at office buildings, retail stores, and malls take place in the parking lot? Lawyers that take on these victims cases often point blame at the business for “poor response time”. TPA Enforcement officers are trained in patroling and preventing criminal activity. It’s important to note that where parking lot security has been implemented, customer use has actually increased because they feel safer.
Everyday parking lot crime has become as much a part of Wal-Mart’s brand as everyday low prices. Wal-Mart will continue to deny that crime in their parking lots is an issue but what the retailer’s shareholders must fear most is that shoppers will become fearful every time they leave a Wal-Mart alone.
Owning a parking lot can be major concern as these sites have always been a magnet for muggings, thefts, break-ins, assaults and accidents. In addition to normal security issues throughout a parking lot, property owners also need to be concerned with liability. With the recent rise in the number of legal cases surrounding liability for parking lots and publicly traveled areas, property owners have even more reason to improve parking lot security. As a case in point, numerous incidents were occurring in the parking lot of a regional retailer, which led to an initiative for improving security measures.
I think the key lesson here is parking lot crime is a crime of opportunity. Make sure you don’t provide the opportunity. Keep a low profile on your tools, lock them up, if they are in an open bed and park near the store for as short a time as possible. The longer the time they have to work unnoticed, the more thieving they will do.
Yesterday, Natatia Bledsoe, p ublic information officer for the city police, reported on the latest parking lot crime at the hospital. Bledsoe said that a Newport News resident returned to his car to find a broken window. “Items of value” were stolen from the vehicle, Bledsoe said. While police were investigating, they found three other vehicles with similar damage and thefts.
Every day in Nashville and throughout Tennessee, innocent people become the victims of violent crimes. Sadly, many of the murders, rapes, sexual assaults, shootings, robberies and other serious crimes could have been prevented if property owners or other negligent parties would have taken simple steps before the crime was committed. In many cases, property and business owners know of the high risk of crime but still fail to take simple, cost-efficient steps to protect their customers and employees.
“While we were there we saw a suspicious car parked across the street — a woman was behind the wheel and a man was sitting in the back seat, diagonal from the woman. It looked to me like he was too big to be in the back, like his head was up against the ceiling of the car. It looked like, if he wanted to, he could have jumped out of the back, run into the parking lot, smashed a window, grabbed some things from a car and the woman could have pulled around to pick him up. He could easily jump into the backseat while she drives off,” said the victim.
On December 18th, police in Moraine, Ohio were searching for a man who robbed a 62-year-old woman at gunpoint in a Wal-Mart parking lot. Police said the man pointed a gun at the woman and demanded that she turn over her purse.
Of course, the most significant issue related to parking lot garages is the safety issue. All too often, there are stories in the news about people who have been assaulted in parking lot garages. Sadly, it’s usually the same parking lot garages. The reasons for assault are numerous: little or no security patrols, lack of security cameras, and poor lighting are just a few of the reasons that parking lot garages are the location of so much crime. However, if you know of a story involving assault and a parking garage, you can help draw attention to the issue by filing on ComplaintsList.com.
