Jogging safety should be a concern to anyone who decides to start a jogging program. Since for most individuals it is a sport taken up for health reasons, it would be foolish to sustain an injury while trying to get your body in shape.
Although many people do not listen to this warning, for your jogging safety it is better not jog while listening to music over earphones, especially if you are jogging on a street. There are audible sounds that occur many times before an accident happens and if you can not hear these sounds you can not take preventive measures.
Running with someone is the safest option and there is no easy substitute for accepting responsibility for your own personal safety. Something bad is more likely to happen to you when you are by yourself because you are simply an easier target.
Running in pairs is the ideal way to avoid being a victim. However, if you prefer to run alone there are several simple precautions you can take to reduce the odds of you becoming a target.
Make sure that you have your cell phone with you while running alone. You should be able to call the emergency number or your family if required. Apps that can detect your location or send signals to chosen contacts can also be of help in case you are in a difficult situation.
I normally carry pepper spray when running, not when riding. Dogs tend to attack bikes more than joggers because, well, dogs tend to chase bikes more than runners and I’m not sure why. Most of my confrontations with the furry un-friend has been when cycling.
Pepper spray is a must have tool for urban running that can protect you from multiple threats to include aggressive stray dogs and human attackers. The spray is non-fatal but entirely incapacitating and comes in small, lightweight, canisters with wrist straps that allow you to carry it while running. However, when running on mountain trails, I recommend bear mace over pepper spray for defense against wild animals. The canisters are slightly larger and more cumbersome to carry on runs, but their spray can reach distances of up to 35 feet compared to 10 feet with personal defense pepper spray. This added length is needed against predators such as bears, wolves, and mountain lions, who are much faster and deadlier than the average dog.
Know the area. If you are travelling to an unfamiliar area, find out what areas are safe, as running through a high crime area is a bad idea. Talking to runners who know the area is the best approach, but non-runners usually have a good idea of the safe areas.
As a general rule, underground or multi-story car parks should be avoided, as they are breeding grounds for vandalism and crime. If they already exist, limiting entry points and providing them with sturdy locked gates could minimize danger. Alternatively, each resident could be provided with a lockable garage in their own space, with robust, vandal proof metal doors – garages within garages, so to speak. Or users can be provided with a secure lock or a plastic keycard, which operates electronic doors.
If you live in a wealthy neighborhood, don’t let this make you think you are completely safe — a person can commit a violent crime regardless of their class. This is not to scare you, but thinking you are completely immune is not a good mindset. No matter where you live, you should be aware of your surroundings when you run and able to defend yourself — even if the worst t not likely to happen.
